STAR dentistry is an amalgam (mercury filling) free clinic. Amalgam fillings have been linked to many systemic health issues and we strongly advise to have these replaced with white (composite) fillings.

Composite fillings have improved dramatically over the years and studies now show that if placed correctly, composite fillings will last as long, if not longer, than old, traditional metal fillings.

Composite fillings are also used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the colour of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth. They are also used to replace old amalgam fillings and to reduce sensitivity cause from wear on your teeth.

How are composite fillings placed?

Following removal of tooth decay, the tooth is prepared by gentle etching and bonding, followed by a layering technique of the filling material. Each layer is cured (set) using ultraviolet light to ensure a strong and well sealed restoration.

What are the advantages of composite fillings?

Aesthetics and the ability to bond the tooth together are the main advantages of composite fillings. Dentists are able to blend different shades of the filling material together to create a natural result and the composite itself bonds the remaining tooth structure together to create strength, something amalgam cannot do.
