What are crowns and Bridges?

Crowns are porcelain or metal helmets used to strengthen heavily broken down teeth. Like the name suggests, they sit around the tooth, covering it fully to prevent any chance of breakage in the future, similar to a bucket over a sandcastle or a bicycle helmet on your head.

Crowns are a fantastic way to solidify a tooth a for many years to come.

When a tooth is lost and a gap is present, as the name suggests, a bridge can cross that gap. Bridges are multiple crowns attached to each other in one unit allowing the space to be filled. Bridges can be an alternative to dental implants where there is not enough bone.

What are Dental Crowns and Bridges made from?

In the past, dental crowns were made from metal, commonly gold, or porcelain covered metal. Now, due to advances in material technology, most crowns and bridges are made entirely from beautiful, high strength porcelain to match the colour and detail of your teeth. These porcelains, such as emax and zirconia, are capable of withstanding far higher forces than your mouth could ever create, meaning fractures are nearly impossible.

At STAR dentistry Sydney, we are so confident in our skill and technicians, that all of our crown and bridge work comes with a 5 year warranty.

How do I know if I need a dental crown or bridge?

A dental crown or bridge will be recommend in these circumstances:

  • Replace a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining
  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Restoring a fractured tooth
  • Attach a bridge
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
  • Cover a tooth that has had root canal treatment

How do Bridges Work?

A dental bridge is a permanent option to replace missing teeth. Gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite and often cause gum problems.

As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges. We can help you decide which to use, based on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and cost.
